MOTHER OF PEARL Mother of pearl is the common name for irridescent nacre, a layer of material which forms the shell lining of many mollusks. When nacre deposits around a substance lodged inside the mollusk, it becomes a pearl. In ancient Egypt, the decorative use of mother of pearl has been traced as far back as 4000 BC. Jewelry made from mother of pearl is considered organic jewelry, originating from a living organism.
